Resignation letter template
A resignation letter only has to do two things: say that you are resigning, and give your last working day. Anything more is courtesy. This template keeps it short and leaves space for a line of thanks.

Letter of resignation
Dear [Manager’s name],
Please accept this letter as formal notice of my resignation from my position as [job title] at [Company name].
In line with my notice period of [length, from your contract], my last working day will be [date].
I will do everything I can to make the handover as smooth as possible.
Yours sincerely,
[your name]
When to use it
Use it when you have decided to leave a job and want to give formal written notice — most employers expect resignation in writing even after you have told your manager in person.
Tips for writing it
- Check your contract for your notice period and count your last day from the date the letter is received.
- If your contract says nothing, the legal minimum an employee must give after a month in the job is one week.
- Keep it positive and brief; this letter may sit on your file for years.
- Offer to help with the handover — it costs nothing and is remembered.
- Date the letter and keep a copy for your records.

Frequently asked questions
How much notice do I have to give?
Whatever your contract says. If it does not say, the statutory minimum for an employee who has worked there for more than a month is one week. Your employer can agree to a shorter period.
Do I have to give a reason for resigning?
No. A resignation letter does not need a reason, and it is usually better not to include criticism in it.
Can printle post my resignation letter for me?
